The Skyscraper Museum

The Skyscraper Museum is devoted to the study of high-rise building, past, present, and future. The Museum explores tall buildings as objects of design, products of technology, sites of construction, investments in real estate, and places of work and residence. This site will look better in a browser that supports web standards, but it is accessible to any browser or Internet device.

ARCHIKIDS
Saturday October 7, November 4
10 AM—Noon
Alongside architect Yves Roger, children ages 9-13 will explore skyscraper architecture and work on a hands-on building project, which they will be able to bring home. As they learn and work, children will be surrounded by images, vintage film and models of actual skyscrapers of the past, present and future.

 

HALLOWEEN COSTUME WORKSHOP

Get ready for Halloween at The Skyscraper Museum. Using a variety of materials, children will create fun costumes based on their favorite skyscrapers.

STACK 'EM HIGH

Get familiar with the major players in the world of tall buildings in New York by simulating their construction. Using stacking blocks, we invite kids to make shapes like the Empire State Building and the Woolworth Building using kid-sized images. Upon construction, get your picture taken with your mile-high building!

All materials will be provided. 4-member teams can be any combination of family, friends, classmates or individuals working collaboratively in small groups (including one student 16 years or younger). After a tour of the exhibition where you can learn a little bit more about how to make your building friendly to the environment, we'll use various art supplies to create our building toppers. Shape and Strength: Beginning Engineers and Architects Workshop
March 25, August 13, 10 AM to 12 noon
In this workshop, children between the ages of 10 and 14 will complete three projects that demonstrate the relationship between shape and strength in engineering and architecture. By completing these projects with paper and cardboard, children learn the architectural principals used in the creation of arches, bridges, and buildings.

ArchiKids Workshop

The Skyscraper Museum will offer a free workshop run by ArchiKids for children ages 9-13. Ornament Creations

The Skyscraper Museum will ring in the beginning of winter with an ornament making workshop. Using an array of materials, kids ages 4 to 12 will make a skyscraper-inspired treasure to take home.

"Favorites" Postcard Making

Kids ages 7 to 12 are invited for a private tour of the "Favorites" exhibition. Using paper and cardboard, we’ll then construct our own postcards in the spirit of the ones used to commemorate the tall buildings of Manhattan.

Skyscraper Costume Workshop

Riveting Tales and Demonstration
August 6, 10 AM to 11:30 AM
Presented by Steve Havemann
Third-generation ironworker Steve Havemann will demonstrate the historical process of riveting using an antique forge, tongs, and a pneumatic gun like those used to build the Empire State Building. The program will take place at The Skyscraper Museum, 39 Battery Place, and is free to families and children of all ages.

Traditional Worker's Songs and Stories
July 30, 11 AM to 12 noon

The Skyscraper Museum will present traditional stories and songs representing the many countries and cultures of workers
who built New York’s classic skyscrapers. Children will be able to join in and sing along with many of the songs from around the world. Come and enjoy Reid’s "beautifully expressive vocals that provide a memorable musical and folkloric experience." (Folk Central Magazine.) The program is recommended for ages 6-9, at a cost of $10.00 per family. Program is free for Museum Members. Space is limited, so please call (212) 945-6324 to make a reservation.

Skyscrapers: The Ultimate Structural Challenge
