The Skyscraper Museum

The Skyscraper Museum is devoted to the study of high-rise building, past, present, and future. The Museum explores tall buildings as objects of design, products of technology, sites of construction, investments in real estate, and places of work and residence. This site will look better in a browser that supports web standards, but it is accessible to any browser or Internet device.

SCHOOL VISITS

The Museum visit incorporates learning from across the New York State curriculum, including science, mathematics, the arts, and social studies. Educators lead tours (up to 35 students) that allow students to interact with the Museum’s collections. Students leave with an appreciation of skyscrapers and their role in society as well as a better understanding of the methods of constructing tall buildings.

+ Partnership with the Center for Architecture Foundation
Teachers may schedule a trip to both The Skyscraper Museum and the Center for Architecture Foundation. Students will first tour the current exhibition at the Museum and then visit the Center for Architecture for a hands-on activity. Read more about it here.

Program Partnership with the Center for Architecture Foundation
The Skyscraper Museum has partnered with the Center for Architecture Foundation to provide a dual visit program; students tour the Museum in the morning and then head to the Center for Architecture (536 LaGuardia Place between Bleecker and West Third, New York, NY) for a workshop exploring themes behind tall buildings.

+ MY COMMUNITY: BUILDING STORIES
The Building Stories program focuses on how skyscrapers support communities and the people who live and work in them. In the classroom, students can build a miniature box city and develop their very own 3-D town.

+ BODY BUILDINGS
Students learn about the unique building structures of skyscrapers then build model skyscraper frames to test strength and durability against wind forces.

+ SKYSCRAPERS AND THE CITY
Students learn about building demands within the urban context. In the classroom, students create representations of the businesses and services needed in a city and figure out how to fit them into the fixed city grid.

+ SKYSCRAPER: STRENGTH AND STRUCTURE
Students focus on the engineering and design of skyscrapers. In the classroom, students are able to create and test model skyscrapers with different loads and forces, and learn about the balance between the arts and sciences in skyscraper construction.

The fee for the program is $225. Payment is made to The Center for Architecture Foundation. For more information, call The Skyscraper Museum at 212.945.6324 or email education[AT]skyscraper.org. To register for the program, contact The Center for Architecture Foundation at 212.358.6133.
