The Skyscraper Museum
For Educators
The Skyscraper Museum

The Skyscraper Museum is devoted to the study of high-rise building, past, present, and future. The Museum explores tall buildings as objects of design, products of technology, sites of construction, investments in real estate, and places of work and residence. This site will look better in a browser that supports web standards, but it is accessible to any browser or Internet device.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Skyscraper Museum is proud to offer two different professional development classes, in addition to Meet and Greets for teachers throughout the year. Please email education[AT]skyscraper.org to subscribe to our Educators newsletter, which will alert you to our offerings.

Using Primary Resources for Interdisciplinary Learning (Elementary)

As early as third grade, students in New York State are expected to be able to read and correctly interpret a variety of documents including letters, tables, photographs, drawings, tables, graphs, lists, and so on. Primary source materials provide teachers with a unique opportunity to introduce students to documents in the context of authentic, constructive learning, providing key social studies knowledge while also developing higher-order skills of analysis and evaluations. This workshop will navigate teachers through the online collections of The Skyscraper Museum as well as demonstrate techniques for the effective use of these documents for grades 2-6.

Cost is $45 per person, and includes lunch.

Teaching Financial Literacy through the New York City Skyline (Secondary)

In order to succeed in competitive global markets, high school seniors need to graduate with a basic understanding of economic principles. Using the history of New York City as a microcosm of the U.S. economy, The Skyscraper Museum's collection lends itself to a hands-on exploration of how the profit motive drove the New York City skyline upward. In this workshop, teachers will learn the economic principles behind New York real estate historically and in the present day, and will learn methods for communicating these ideas effectively in their 7-12 grade classrooms.

Cost is $45 per person, and includes lunch.

Meet and Greet

These informal evenings bring teachers into the Museum for exploration of the physical gallery space and the Museum's virtual gallery. Teachers briefly tour the Museum and its educational programs, and educators are on hand to discuss specific classroom applications of mMseum materials. This event is free, rsvp requested.

Our education team is also equipped to tailor Museum resources to the needs of your learning community. If you are interested in bringing a Museum educator to your school or conference for a professional development session, please contact the Museum at 212.945.6324, or email education[AT]skyscraper.org.
