HISTORY PANEL 28

Title: Lower Manhattan 1976

Subtitle: March 8, 1976

Text: A late winter afternoon in 1976 turns the World Trade Center into a sundial. The Twin Towers cast long shadows that point up West Broadway into the warehouse district that is now the Tribeca neighborhood. The cleared blocks north of the Trade Center, many still used for parking, were part of the Washington Market urban renewal district, razed in the late 1950s. The landfill of Battery Park City, begun with earth from the WTC foundations, has expanded to nearly its full ninety-two acres.

Sunshine highlights the World Trade Center's super-block site and towers, presenting a striking contrast to the dark shadows throughout most of the historic financial district.
