Descriptive Summary

Creator: Robertson, Leslie E.
Title: Records of Leslie E. Robertson and Associates (LERA): World Trade Center Construction Images
Quantity: images, digitized from original 35mm slides on to 51 CD-ROMs and 31,779 GB
Abstract: The collection incluedes photographic images documenting virtually every step of the World Trade Center’s construction process. The images in this collection were taken mostly by Robertson, but also by various other anonymous photographers.

Arrangement

As well as being saved in the archive’s computer hard drive, the digital images are burned on to 51 CD-ROMs and saved as uncompressed files in TIFF format. A complete list of files on CD-ROM follows the container list below. Images are arranged numerically by accession number. However, the accession numbers are not sequential, and they simply reflect the order of the slide scanned and recorded prior to selection and acquisition.
The collection is organized in one series.

Historical/Biographical Note

Leslie E. Robertson was the structural engineer of record for the World Trade Center (WTC). As a partner in the Seattle-based firm of Skilling, Helle, Christiansen and Robertson from 1966 through1973, Robertson worked in New York for his client the Port of New York Authority, later renamed the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), collaborating with Port Authority engineers and with the architect Minoru Yamasaki on the design and construction of the WTC complex. During this time Robertson photographed and collected more than 2,810, 35mm slides documenting virtually every step of the World Trade Center's construction process. The images in this collection were taken mostly by Robertson, but also by various other anonymous photographers.

Originally intended for technical and office purposes, these images nevertheless contain a remarkable level of historical detail. They document many of the technical innovations of the architect and engineers and record visits to the construction site and other places of production and testing. They are also, uniquely, a record of the unfolding process of construction of the then tallest and largest buildings in the world seen through the eyes and camera lens of one of the key designers.

In the summer of 2002 The Skyscraper Museum worked with Leslie E. Robertson and Associates (LERA), the structural engineering firm, that is one of the successors of Skilling, Helle, Christiansen, and Robertson, to arrange for the accession and digital capturing of Robertson's slides of the WTC construction. The process began with an initial review and numbering of the collection at LERA. Once the scope of the slide collection was known, Carol Willis, director of The Skyscraper Museum, selected 534 representative images to be digitally captured. These were then assigned a special identifying mark and individually scanned. The digital files were then burned on to archival CD- ROMs for transport to The Skyscraper Museum where they were assigned an accession number, cataloged, and became a part of the Museum collection as a loan with further developing of perpetual rights and reproduction agreement. As a Museum trustee Robertson played a critical role in assisting the Museum staff to identify and caption the images.

The digital images stored on CD-ROMs were copied to the Museum archive computer hard drive, and three digital reference files and service archival files were created according to national standards and specification. These three variants of smaller digital reference and service files were also saved on The Skyscraper Museum's archival computer. The original slide collection is currently housed at LERA office.

In 2005 the digitized images became the centerpiece of the Museum online archive project VIVA2, part of its continuing mission to tell the multifaceted stories of the design and construction skyscraper history.

Scope and Content Note

The LERA collection includes the digital surrogates of the 534 World Trade Center slides spanning approximately 1969 to 1973. The images document the building process from excavation to the topping out event, as well as illustrate innovative design features such as slurry wall construction, bathtub design, tube building design, antenna system, etc. From many angles the images show the work of Favco STD 2700 Tower Cranes purchased in Australia especially for the towers erection. Multiple construction workers and engineers are portrayed at work as well as during preliminary testing. There are also documentary images of the preliminary off-site testing including of material strength and of wind tunnel models. Finally, some of the structural engineering design diagrams and graphs are also included. Some of the slides taken represent photographs of Oregon Research Institute Planar Motion Chamber displaying off-site testing process (photographs are lost, potentially captured before 1969.)
